First staggered plates mark Vermont launch in 1978
Alice Ringer of Vergennes receives the first pleasure car plates with an August 1978 expiration from Vermont Motor Vehicles staff. The staggered system, effective September 1, applies to new registrations for pleasure cars and light trucks, each plate set valid for one year with a $32 fee. Renewals expiring in February 1978 will stagger over five to 18 months to ease service. The department says the change saves residents and improves year round service. The expiration month is printed in a blank square on the plate.
