Arab governments warned they may rush urgent aid to Jordan if Israel launches raids across the Jordan River in retaliation for Arab bombings in Tel Aviv. Arab newspapers echoed the warning as regional tensions spiked.
Unidentified flying object tracked from Barahona northeast of Madrid challenged an F-104 jet climbing to 50 000 feet before fuel limits forced return. Thousands in Madrid saw a triangular, glowing object with varied imagery and no scientific explanation offered.
A satchel TNT blast in Saigon's Cholon district killed at least eight people and likely nine more, with 40 foot rubble piles trapping victims. U.S. and South Vietnamese forces battled Viet Cong in two clashes as rescue teams recovered bodies and evacuated the wounded. Authorities blamed Viet Cong terrorists for the explosion, which hit a Vietnamese information office and a nearby restaurant.
Prague reports Dubcek convened the central committee amid panic and gloom over rumored purges and tightened Soviet control. Moscow backed rumors of planned demonstrations to justify increased occupation, while Husak and Vohnout defended normalization and vowed no return to Stalinist censorship.
Miami Beach UPI reports former Kentucky governor and ex baseball commissioner A B Chandler is floated as a possible Wallace running mate for a third party bid. Wallace, staying at a hotel, will announce a choice in Washington after considering Curtis LeMay Ezra Benson Paul Harvey and Louise Day Hicks among others.
Inside the paper the editorial cautions that The Banner lacks sufficient information on potential county senators to publish an endorsement. Other brief items note North Bennington residents receiving school tax rate details, a large trailer park issue adding another unit from Pownal, and a visit by Vermont Historical Society director to Manchester.
Senate Republican leader Everett Dirksen said he has faced multiple death threats since last spring and has lived under constant protection by the FBI Secret Service and local police. He recalled threats, including one Aug. 24, and described guards meeting him at Chicago and keeping watch during Illinois campaign stops.
Vermont Commissioner of Education Harvey B. Scribner urged realignment toward learner centered programs at a Prospect School briefing in Bennington. He warned 90 percent of U S schools still rely on static boards and urged relevancy and student to student dialogue to make instruction meaningful. Page 14 Col 1.
