O Neill urges compromise with Nixon over remaining bills
House Democratic Leader Thomas P. O Neill Jr. called for compromise rather than further confrontation with President Nixon as Congress resumes the 93rd Congress. He suggested inviting Melvin Laird to press for compromise on vetoed or to-be-vetoed programs, listing seven bills at risk including the minimum wage and medical services. Nixon has vetoed five measures this year, and override votes remain unlikely.
