Nixon delays U S pay hikes to set an example
President Nixon asks Congress to approve a six month postponement of pay raises for about 4.85 million federal workers and military personnel from January 1 to July 1 with a possible October delay. The move aims to ease the federal budget strain and demonstrate fiscal restraint by the government as a major employer. Press secretary Ziegler said private industry is not required to follow this restraint as part of stage two of the policy.

Washington Window Otto Otepka Still Watches and Waits
Otto F. Otepka remains in a waiting position as his Senate confirmation for a full SACB term stalls. Once chief security officer at the State Department, he has since lingered in a small office after a 1963 dismissal over secret documents. Despite Nixon nominations and committee support, a final Senate vote is pending, risking another loss of position if adjournment ends the recess appointment.
