Bottle ban sparks grumbles as prices rise statewide
The new throwaway bottle ban took effect nationwide amid mixed views about its impact. Beer prices jumped with Budweiser up from 1.45 to 1.95 including a 5 cent deposit per can, while storekeepers fear sales drops and extra handling, and some drinkers consider crossing state lines to dodge deposits. A Banner survey shows guarded support for the measure backed by environmental groups and Gov. Salmon, who has defended the law despite criticism.

State clears down payment to buy Lamoille Railroad
The Vermont Transportation Authority voted 3 1 Friday to make a 125000 down payment on purchasing the St Johnsbury and Lamoille County Railroad. They agreed to buy for 125 million, repair 75 thousand, and lease to Bruno Laoti led businessmen of Lamoille County. Pinsly of Boston may stop operating the line after the state’s formal takeover, with discussions on worker arrangements ongoing and final ICC approval needed. The authority extended the deadline for receipt of the down payment to midnight and plans to finalize the contract next week. Laoti’s group could take control by Friday at the earliest, with Pinsly earning some extra money and aiming to operate until November 1. The authority will pay Laoti 11000 monthly during operation under the yet-to-be-finalized agreement.
