Senior group backs control of vitamins
A UPI report notes Cyril F. Brickfield of the American Association of Retired Persons and the National Retired Teachers Association urged Congress to support FDA rules restricting high potency vitamins. The plan, set to take effect January 1, 1975, would label any food or supplement with more than three times the RDA as a drug and subject it to FDA oversight. Brickfield warned private interests are fighting the regulations, which aim to protect 21 million elderly Americans from fraudulent health product claims.

Origin of independent prosecutors traced to 1951 bill
Washington Window notes that a freshman subcommittee member, Richard Nixon, sponsored a 1951 bill to let chief judges appoint independent prosecutors at grand jury request. The idea resurfaced to replace Archibald Cox after Nixon’s firing, with Rep John Culver leading a Democratic push and support from some Republicans. The 1951 bill never passed. Newbold Morris was named as special prosecutor then and was later fired.
