Explosion Kills 43 On Carrier Oriskany
In the Gulf of Tonkin off North Vietnam the aircraft carrier Oriskany suffered a catastrophic fire sparked by magnesium photo flares, killing 43 sailors and injuring 16 as crew battled flames on five decks. Firefighters pulled pilots and bombs from danger, some dying in bunks, as two helicopters and several A4E Skyhawks were damaged. The blaze, not tied to enemy action, raged from 7:34 am until late afternoon, with medical teams flown in from the Constellation to assist the wounded and deceased.
