Former Rep Hanna Linked to Korea bribery scheme in 1968 meeting

KCIA head Kim Hyung Wook testified before the House Ethics Committee that he, Tongsun Park, and Rep Richard Hanna met in August 1968 to discuss Park becoming broker for U S rice sales to Korea and a plan to distribute money among U S congressmen. Kim said Park boasted of bribing lawmakers with cash sums up to 10 000. Hanna pleaded innocent in a Washington court to charges tied to the operation.

Haley mulls bid for top Republican state chair

Bennington County Republican chairman Thomas Haley Sr. floated a trial balloon on Friday about seeking the state party chairmanship to succeed Walter Kennedy. He aims to decide by Monday, citing a desire to open the party to more participation while condemning top leaders for restrictive control. Haley criticized Kennedy’s secretive style and cited the Hackett selection as evidence of “kingmakers” at work. See COMMITTEE on back page.

Carter on the road to push policies

President Carter defends his energy plan at a Des Moines Jefferson Jackson Day dinner calling it bitter medicine to prevent economic decline. He toured Detroit and Des Moines on a Midwest West swing and faced urban problems questions and sharp criticisms from Rep. John Conyers and youth program director Romelia Carter. Thousands welcomed him as he continued his campaign push toward his next page.

Hackel slated to lead U S Mint under Carter

Boston Herald American reports Stella Hackel former Vermont state treasurer will be named director of the U S Mint within days. An FBI background check is the last step before appointment by President Carter. Hackel already serves as a Treasury Department consultant and is undergoing Mint training. She recently resigned as Rutland city attorney and her salary would be 50000 dollars annually.

Dissent Within Abenaki Tribe Strains Vermont Rights Fight

A split within the Abenaki Tribal Council in Vermont erupts over leadership with Kent Ouimette banished and a new Missisquoi Band forming to advocate for the tribe. Berkowitz Found Competent to Stand Trial in Last Son of Sam Case

New York authorities ruled David Berkowitz mentally competent Friday to face trial for the final Son of Sam murder. Brooklyn Justice John Starkey said Berkowitz is oriented in time and place, has a working relationship with counsel, and can proceed. Doctor testimony split on competency, with psychiatrists for both sides. The judge set motions for Nov 2, without an official trial date, and Berkowitz remains in King's County Hospital psychiatric ward for now.
