Williams College Tightens Budget After First Deficit Since 1948
Williams College reports a year ending June deficit of 159000 dollars, about 1.5 percent of a 10 million dollar operating budget. The shortfall is blamed on unstable stock markets, with administrators pursuing belt tightening, possible tuition hikes, and halted plans for a 5 million dollar library. Enrollment growth to 1800 and aid increases are hoped to offset the gap amid broader college-wide funding challenges.
