Plane crash injures two near Manchester on Route 7
A single engine Cherokee 140 trainer owned by Bennington Aviation crashed on U S Route 7 west of the North Shire Motel in Manchester. Pilot Daniel Gompert 22 of Buskirk N Y and passenger 15 year old Joseph Hart of Bennington were injured and transported to Putnam Memorial Hospital with facial cuts and fractures. The crash occurred about 405 p m authorities said the plane was destroyed and investigators from Vermont Aeronautics Department and local police are on the scene. Witnesses described the plane appearing out of control and aiming away from nearby buildings. The two victims were listed in fair and satisfactory condition respectively and were not burned at impact. Witnesses and officials said the plane did not ignite after impact. The Bennington Airport manager said Gompert holds a private license and Hart was aboard for a sightseeing ride.

Hoosick Falls athlete dies after football injury
John W. Hayden 16, president of the Hoosick Falls Central School varsity Club, died at Ellis Hospital after injuries from a game against Greenwich. The junior played guard and linebacker, remained in a coma, and his death led to postponement of Saturday’s Schuylerville match. Plane crash in Arizona kills former U S education chief
In a wintry storm, a Scenic Airlines twin engine Cessna 402 crashed on a remote desert plateau in northwest Arizona killing 10 people including former U S Education Commissioner James E. Allen Jr. and his wife. The aircraft was en route to the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas. Investigators cited wing icing as the probable cause.
