Nixon honors Billy Graham in Charlotte with Day ceremony
President Nixon paid tribute to evangelist Billy Graham in Charlotte calling for a renewal of religious faith and character. A crowd of about 12,000 at the Coliseum heard Graham’s remarks before Nixon unveiled a plaque at Graham’s birth site and rode in a motorcade through bunting-filled streets. Security lined the route as about 150,000 spectators watched, with dozens of officials and guests in attendance.

Royalton College President Anthony N. Doria, 44, announced his candidacy as an independent for Vermont's congressional seat. He must file 1,535 notarized signatures by Nov. 20 to place his Vermont Independent Party on the Jan. 7 ballot, and would face the winner of a six way Republican primary and a four man Democratic contest. Doria cites disillusion with major parties, supports Nixon era policies, and has previously fought for his college accreditation amid state board disputes.

Second largest one day troop pullout in Vietnam
UPI reports the U S Navy command announces the second biggest one day withdrawal, trimming combat forces to 20 battalions and total U S troops in Vietnam to 205,350 from a peak 543,400 in 1969. Despite cuts, heavy fighting continues around Krek in Cambodia and in Tay Ninh, with Firebase Pace to remain manned near the border. Government forces say 57 guerrillas were killed in recent actions.

Rutland men survive 70 foot plunge at work site
Two Rutland men were hospitalized after a 70 foot fall from a utility pole while workers from Seaward Construction Co. linked the Vermont Yankee plant to a Cavendish substation. John Delong age 20 was in fair condition with fractures and possible internal injuries in New Hampshire, Lee Parsons 38 in satisfactory condition in Springfield, and Gilbert Garvey 37 was treated and released.

The Iranian consul general blamed radical anti monarchist Iranian émigrés for a powerful bomb at the San Francisco consulate, timed with a shah celebration in Persepolis.
