Inconsistencies by witness unfold at Martin murder trial
MIDDLEBURY Inconsistencies in testimony by a prosecution witness who played pool with defendant Michael J. Martin the night before the October murder were aired on the third day of his Addison Superior Court trial. Witness Garry Tuttle gave three versions of whether Martin was intoxicated. Defense counsel noted depostions where Tuttle described Martin as drinking and then as drunk, while the witness today claimed Martin was not drunk. Tuttle testified he brought his German shepherd to the pool hall, said the dog was not attack trained, and that Martin once mentioned time in Brattleboro Hawaii and Vietnam. Both defendants said they are from Queens, New York.

Two hundred years ago British Gen. John Burgoyne and 7,700 troops surrendered after a long retreat from Fort Ticonderoga to Fishkill Creek near Saratoga. American Maj. Gen. Horatio Gates received the sword after surrender talks, marking the first British army surrender in the New World. The campaign began with hopes of splitting the colonies, but shortages and defeats culminated in the Walloomsac and Bemis Heights actions.

Vergennes man holds three hostages in day-long siege
Gale Thompson a 31 year old Vergennes man pleaded innocent in Vermont District Court to six kidnapping and assault charges after a daylong siege in Ferrisburg. He reportedly held Roger Farley and his two children at gunpoint to force a meeting with his sons. Thompson was captured after a high speed chase near the Farley home and no injuries were reported.
