Walter Mondale and Robert Dole prepared for the first vice presidential debate aired at 9 30 p m EDT from Houston Alley Theater. Dole admitted nervousness while Mondale projected calm as they faced three questioners Hal Bruno Marilyn Berger and Walter Mears. About 658 people including 250 media were to attend the event sponsored by the League of Women Voters and televised on PBS and networks.

Doctor Thompson dies after Woodford crash with parked bus
Marvin L. Thompson 64 a Berlin New York retired doctor died after his 1976 Toyota station wagon left Route 9 during a hail storm and struck a parked 1976 International bus owned by Sullivan Bus Co. He was treated at Putnam Memorial Hospital then Albany Medical Center where he died. The crash occurred at 1 35 pm. Skid marks indicated he tried to stop. He had long served as school physician at Northfield School for Girls in Northfield Massachusetts. He is survived by his widow two daughters and a son. Funeral arrangements are pending.
