Court poll tax ruling spurs delinquents to pay
The state Supreme Court decision allowing license suspensions for unpaid poll taxes has prompted citizens to settle debts. In Bennington, Treasurer R Alma Langlois reports a rush of payments and many names not on lists seek to square obligations. Tax Collector John Malone notes about 25 back taxes paid in a week as the state driver services director Laura Parker says delinquent lists are being circulated and warnings followed by license suspensions if taxes remain unpaid. Delinquent tax rates include a 0.5 percent monthly add on and an 8 percent collection fee. The Bennington poll tax is 11.10 with allocations to state, town, highway, and schools.

Vermont teachers avert first strike in Essex Orleans district
Vermont's first teachers strike was narrowly averted in the 13 town Essex Orleans North Supervisory School District. A 120 to 72 vote by the North Country Education Association gave the union little immediate action as leaders faced low support, while aiming to regroup on salary talks and consider rotating one day walkouts.
