Supreme Court to rule on anti draft welfare cases
The Supreme Court agreed to decide this term on two major issues: whether conscientious objectors in the Vietnam era can be drafted and whether states may cap welfare payments. It accepted appeals from a Boston case where a objector was barred from service and from a Los Angeles draftee who refused induction though not religiously opposed. The welfare cases include Maryland's 250 monthly limit and a Connecticut ruling on stepfather income. The court declined certain other challenges and scheduled fall or winter hearings.
