High cancer incidence at Monsanto Springfield plant
A draft two year federal study found unusually high digestive and genito urinary cancer among 465 Monsanto Springfield plant deaths from 1950 to 1976. While difficult to pinpoint causes, occupational factors are suspected in at least some cases. Monsanto counters with its own study of 593 death certificates, saying no occupational health problem is evident.

Hijackers to stand trial in West Germany
A Czech man and woman hijacked a Czechoslovak Airlines jet with 29 aboard to Frankfurt seeking asylum and will be tried in West Germany. They surrendered peacefully after landing at Frankfurt International Airport. Authorities say they acted on political motives and press for international punishment of hijackers. The suspects, both 21 and 29, were employed by Czechoslovak Airlines and wore ground crew uniforms during the hijack from Karlovy Vary to Prague. The case echoes prior hijackings and German policy to try hijackers in the country they land in.
