Supreme Court again refuses to rule on Viet wam's legality

The Supreme Court declined to decide the constitutionality of the Vietnam War for a second time. The 5-2 ruling left in place a 1964 Tonkin Gulf resolution interpretation and did not grant a hearing. The case, brought by the ACLU for two servicemen, argues implied congressional authority bypasses a formal act.

No agreement reached on taxes by selectmen and rural firemen

Firemen from the Bennington Rural Fire Department met three town selectmen for two hours to discuss taxes. The rurales want a tax rebate for double taxation of fire protection and oppose a contract with the town. Selectmen warn a charter change could share costs town wide and set a precedent for other districts. The meeting ended with no agreement and a plan to push a charter change at March Town Meeting.

Bennington Area Grapples With Weekend Leaf-Peepers Traffic

Vermont foliage draw brought near record tourist flow to Bennington weekend. U S 7 traffic clogged entrances and motel bookings filled weeks ahead. Mt Anthony board reconsiders rental policy for school facilities

Mt Anthony Union school board signals willingness to allow profit and non profit groups to rent school facilities with set rates. Under proposed plan rates include 5 per hour outside use, 19 per hour for cafeteria gym or auditorium, 30 hourly if all three used, plus 15 for kitchen workers. Army ransoms 12 GIs held by angry South Vietnamese

Twelve U S Army truck drivers were kidnapped and held for ransom by angry South Vietnamese veterans near Da Nang nine miles south of the city. After an eight hour seizure, the drivers and six trucks were released once compensation was paid. Ransom demanded was 2.5 million piasters about $9,000, settled for 200,000 piasters plus 170 cases of salad oil and 150 cases of soybean mixture.

Nixon to visit Moscow in May

President Nixon announced in the White House press room that he will travel to Moscow in the latter part of May. He also said he will visit Red China before Moscow and that European and Japanese allies were informed beforehand.

Petition drives GIs to end Vietnam war

In Saigon a group of American servicemen circulated petitions to Congress calling for an immediate cessation of all hostilities in Southeast Asia. Vietnam Veterans Against the War reported several hundred signers from various services, with one organizer briefly arrested by Air Force police. James Mohler of Ohio led the effort, aiming to surpass his 2000-name goal, and the petitions will be sent to the national VAW organization for delivery to Congress before Christmas recess.
