UVM Denies Purge Charge as Four Professors Not Rehired
At the University of Vermont the Arts and Sciences dean rejected claims of a purge in the philosophy department. Four instructors were told they would not be rehired while department chair Stephen Cahn awaits a standards committee report. Final decisions rest with President Edward Andrews Jr after reviews. In Burlington a member of the Governor's Committee on Children and Youth criticized Gov. Salmon for accepting Chairman Frank Manchel’s resignation without a prior meeting, saying the move weakens the committee. Mandel had resigned earlier over the administration’s stance on investigating Weeks School child abuse charges. Pat Jewett called the action ineffective for the panel.
