Maple researchers study old methods to save energy
Underhill Maple researchers at Proctor Maple Research Farm led by Frederick Laing and Howard Dubacek study preheating sap with waste steam and using wood chips to cut fuel costs. They test tubular evaporator designs and assess bark and chip storage while noting labor costs and supply logistics. Results show 15 to 17 percent efficiency gains with preheating and about 50 percent savings from wood chips, depending on moisture, distance, and availability.
