Frost Is No Friend Of Autumn Foliage
University of Vermont Extension agent John C. Page explains why fall colors appear, detailing how cooling weather reveals pigments, differences by tree species, and the impact of frost and sun on color intensity. He notes timing variability among trees, and previews an Oct. 17 Extension meeting on wood stove installation with Wayne Babcock.

Streambank erosion cited as Vermont waterways problem
Vermont riverbanks face widespread erosion with debris and ice damage. Partnerships between landowners and USDA SCS plus state and federal agencies aim to curb sediment loss, flooding, and habitat destruction while funding and technical help support watershed projects and landowner actions. A mound septic system advances septic waste treatment in Champlain Valley homes, with trials led by Magdoff, Villamil, and Simons at the University of Vermont to reduce costs and improve performance.

Beef competition grows as the industry expects steady per capita production and an average price near 46 cents per pound, aided by a record corn crop and soybean crop forecasts.

Cluster fly invasion prompts winter nuisance and control
In Burlington as cold weather nears, large swarms of cluster flies appear around homes. They pose no health risk but are a nuisance all winter. Prevention includes caulking cracks, spraying under eaves and around windows, and using residual sprays such as Ronnel Korlan Methoxychlor or Rabon. Inside, aerosols with pyrethrins help on contact, and DDVP resin strips suit unused spaces. For details request leaflet No. 11 from the University of Vermont.
