Bill would raise S.S. taxes sharply and set future benefits
Washington reports the House Ways and Means Committee drafted a broad Social Security overhaul to sharply raise payroll taxes over the next decade and to fix retirement benefits for future generations. The bill aims to cover government and nonprofit workers, raise earnings thresholds, and reduce gender disparities while tying benefits to income brackets into 2050.

Dan Dzurisin of the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory described very small fluctuations and noted the lava flow from the 18 day eruption, ended October 1, was cooling and creeping. Magma continues to move underground and gather near Kalalua Crater on the east rift zone about 20 miles east of the summit.

Dole alleges intimidation over canal treaty hearings
Senator Robert Dole accused the administration of intimidation after he disclosed a secret State Department cable questioning U.S. intervention rights in a canal emergency. The report sparked renewed debate on whether the Panama Canal treaties grant the United States a right to intervene and whether Navy ships have priority access. Senate leaders urged full document disclosure as lawmakers weigh the treaties amid calls for transparency and clarification from the Foreign Relations Committee.
