Volpe Seeks Labor Backing for Sales Tax in Boston
Gov. John A. Volpe pressed labor delegates in Boston to support the sales tax plan amid a convention where the Massachusetts AFL-CIO voted almost unanimously against it. Only four of about 1,500 delegates favored the tax, while labor leaders warned of possible protests at the State House. The House earlier trimmed the tax, dropping a $44 million income tax provision, narrowing the package to about $202 million.
