Viet Cong guerrillas launched a mortar and small arms assault on 1000 Vietnam troops in the central highlands about 300 miles northeast of Saigon. Government losses were reported heavy. A second fight occurred further south in the Mekong Delta.
Senator George D. Aiken warned Vermont dairymen that a two price milk system would face court scrutiny if adopted. He opposed the bill and doubted any milk order would vote for the proposal. Gov. Hoff and Agriculture Commissioner Rexford favored farmer choice in pricing amid fears of cheaper western milk flooding markets.
Pope Paul VI arrived in New York aboard a DC8 from Rome and greeted about 2,000 onlookers at Kennedy Airport. The 68-year-old pontiff praised America as free, industrious, and wondrous, blessing U.S. Roman Catholics and extending a paternal greeting after a 4335 mile Atlantic flight. United Nations Secretary General U Thant and other dignitaries were present.
The Vermont State Department of Highways has begun a route location study for the Bennington bypass, expected to wrap in about three months. The study compares a three quadrant beltline around Bennington with the commission’s earlier and consultant Burdis’ lines, noting differences through the northwest quadrant. Holden says the department will keep the planning commission informed as engineering and economic analyses proceed.
Jakarta faced a curfew as the Indonesian Communist Party reportedly armed its millions amid fears of guerrilla warfare against President Sukarno. Radio Malaysia cited Jakarta reports of a major army-Communist showdown, while Sukarno reassured the nation and appointed Suharto to restore order.
The Vermont Emergency Board rejected a $7000 request for a Burlington school for the mentally retarded. Former Sen. John J. O'Brien urged relief to avoid fundraising, but $2500 will come from the Bennington Retarded special education fund. The Burlington program serves 20 children and will open in January. Also approved was $7000 for an alcoholism rehabilitation post, with former Rep. Richard Mallary the sole dissenter.
Dr Jacob Bronowski, famed for the two cultures debate, will address inaugural ceremonies for Dr Edward J Bloustein as president of Bennington College on Saturday Oct 9. Bronowski, deputy director at Salk Institute, will present a challenge on a topic of national importance.
Albany photographer Bernard J. Kolenberg, 38, killed in a South Viet Nam plane crash while riding in a U.S. fighter aircraft on a mission to strike Viet Cong positions about 250 miles north of Saigon. He was on leave from the Times-Union and had joined the Associated Press assignment a week earlier.

Winston Prouty, and Rep. Robert Stafford. Mohawk Airlines President Robert Peach notes Burlington is the first New England city besides Boston and Hartford to offer first class fan jet service.
In Burlington UPI Gerald Ford House Minority Leader blasted President Johnson and urged GOP unity. He welcomed John Birch Society members, while Vermont leaders criticized Hoff and Johnson programs, stressing party cohesion to oppose the President.
