East West Highway Impacts Bennington Economy and Region

A regional analysis estimates the proposed east west highway would boost Bennington County by expanding access to key industries including electronics, electrical equipment, plastics, and furniture, while benefiting recreation areas such as Big Bromley, Snow Valley, Woodford State Park, Dutch Hill, and the local race track. The study projects up to about 3700 jobs and 3.7 billion 1969 dollars in ten years from electronics and related sectors, with substantial construction, apparel, greetings cards, and tourism gains, though labor limits and partial county impact temper the overall benefit. Gov Davis questions the project’s economic justification given potential job gains around 3000 in the southern Vermont tier, while the Regional Commission notes environmental concerns and varying public preference for routes near Rutland or St Johnsbury, urging route planning that balances social benefits with costs.
