Vermont Yankee cost soars from 80 to 190 million
Brattleboro hearing on the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant in Vernon revealed the project’s cost rising from an 1967 estimate of 80 million to 190.5 million by next June. Albert A. Cree, president of Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Corp., led testimony noting 180.4 million in construction and fuel costs plus about 10 million in common stock dividends. The session was halted by a snowstorm and disrupted by gymnasium acoustics and faulty microphones as Cree outlined funding from stock, bonds, a revolving fund, and bank loans. He warned idle costs would mount if the plant remains nonoperational, while plans call for up to 50 percent output by January 20 under a temporary operating license. Governor Davis and utility officials back operation to avoid winter shortfalls.

The Vermont Racing Commission refused to grant permission to Philadelphia businessman Paul Harron to purchase the Green Mountain racetrack at Pownal.
