William C. Fels Dies at 48 Headed Bennington College
Dr. William C. Fels, president of Bennington College since 1957, died at Memorial Hospital for Cancer and Allied Diseases after a lingering illness. He was 48, born October 31. He had been on sabbatical in 1964 and Bermuda most of last winter and spring. Acting presidents mediating his duties were Thomas P. Brockway and Harry W. Pearson. Pearson paid tribute noting Fels’ wisdom, guidance, and humane vision. Despite illness, college life was to continue as he wished. Fels was known for educational finance reforms and advocacy for state tuition awards and social security backed student aid.
