Leahy Accuses DOD and USDA of Underreporting Spending

Senator Patrick Leahy released a 261 page report after a six month probe accusing the Defense and Agriculture departments of underreporting advisory committee costs and discriminating in member selection. He cites over 1,200 federal advisory committees costing about 50 million annually and calls for greater oversight.

Turkey quake relief effort in Van province escalates

U S Secretary of Commerce Elliot Richardson met Turkish Premier Suleyman Demirel in Ankara to discuss emergency actions after a powerful 7.6 earthquake in eastern Turkey. Officials warned of pneumonia measles and other respiratory threats to survivors while Red Cross reported 17 000 tents and 52 000 blankets delivered.

Arab peacekeeping push eyed in southern Lebanon

President Elias Sarkis met aides to discuss possible advance of Arab peacekeeping forces farther south a move Israel warns could provoke. Sources say mixed Syrian and UAE Saudi troops may move toward Tyre and Nabatiyeh within days, with talks ongoing at highest levels and reports of a widened operation.

U.S. and Soviet trade council opens in Moscow

U.S. Treasury Secretary William E. Simon leads a 35 member party to Moscow for the four day U S USSR Trade and Economic Council meeting. The council includes 230 U S firms and 113 Soviet firms and aims to expand trade. A tour of a Kama River truck factory is planned with over 200 appointments for business talks. Trade volume is forecast to hit 2.6 billion dollars by year end 1976.

Carter's daughter to attend integrated Washington public school

Amy Carter will be the first child of a President to attend a racially integrated public school in Washington. The nine year old is assigned to Thaddeus Stevens School near the White House, with Secret Service protection and a white teacher, Verona Meeder, guiding her through the midterm of the fourth grade.
