Three New Language Courses At UVM Offer Chinese and Croatian
Burlington professors announce three new language courses at the University of Vermont under HEW funding. Japanese and Serbo-Croatian begin this year for undergraduates on a small campus, with an evening Chinese course added as part of the program to promote “critical” languages. The plan, overseen by Prof. Truman M. Webster, aims to broaden study where it has been neglected and to develop language learning techniques. HEW seed money supports about 50 campuses for two years, after which programs may continue via student interest or outside support. Students undergo aptitude testing and interviews, use university supplied tape equipment, and are graded with HEW examiners monitoring progress.
