UPI report notes Senator Aiken says vote against Haynsworth signals rebuke of southern ultra conservatism rather than the nominee. Aiken and others discuss possible Nixon pick, with Stennis seen as likely to sail through. Albany GOP officials react, stressing need for a conservative balance on the court.
Space center Houston reports Apollo 12 crew Charles Conrad Alan Bean and Richard Gordon returning from lunar orbit toward home after a successful moon walk telecast They describe gravity easing movement on the moon and the ease of a one handed pushup They also note proximity to Surveyor 3 and plan for splashdown near Pago Pago on Monday afternoon.
Clear and cold conditions persist with highs in the 20s and a fair night as temperatures dip into the teens. Increasing cloudiness expected Sunday but temperatures show little change, keeping a chilly mood.

The Senate rejected Clement F. Haynsworth Jr. 55 to 45, a party line clash that exposed GOP splits and a White House lobbying drive. Nixon vowed to renominate, citing integrity and legal philosophy, as opponents cited ethics concerns and regional bias in the defeat.
Three Massachusetts men Ralph Russo Alfred Angeli and Frank Capizzi were arrested after explosions destroyed the Highland Meadows Hotel owned by Capizzi in a Vermont ski village. No injuries reported though Capizzi was treated for crash injuries. they face arson charges amid a police chase and manhunt.
The Vermont Tax Commission stated that not all elderly residents who may qualify will apply for relief. Bennington officials report no information or forms have been distributed locally. Francis J. Hogan notes calls from eligible residents, and questions why blanks were not mailed with 1969 income tax forms. He doubts many will exhaust the $1 million budgeted despite confusion.
Washington reports 26 men, 15 civilians, are under investigation for the alleged massacre of more than 100 South Vietnamese civilians last year. About 75 people have been interviewed. Medals of two soldiers, 1st Lt. William L. Calley and Ss. Sgt. David Mitchell, were revoked amid charges of premeditated murder and assault with intent to commit murder.
Judge Clement F Haynsworth said he may resign from the U S Court of Appeals after the Senate rejected his Supreme Court nomination. He spoke with President Nixon by phone and declined immediate action, noting the ordeal may be over but his usefulness could be impaired.
