Vermont Missionary On Trial in Rhodesia
American missionary Charles Blakney from Saxton River Vermont pleaded innocent in a Rhodesian magistrates court to charges of arousing hostility against police by claiming brutality. He said two Africans were beaten and tortured with a live electric wire during a missing funds inquiry. Police witnesses denied the room with the snake. Blakney faces up to one year in jail and a 280 dollar fine if convicted.

Platoon Overrun in Viet Nam Stand Near Cambodian Border
A U S Army 1st Air Cavalry platoon of 21 men held off a North Vietnamese battalion for four hours near Kontum Province before being overrun. Only three survived as 102 enemy were killed, many by napalm and air strikes. Squad leader Julius C. Durham, 18, of Petzeryn, S.C., described the relentless assault and near-miss night battle before reinforcements drove off the attackers.

Police Chief Silver Dies After 27 Years Service
Edward L. Silver, 66, chief of police in Bennington for 12 years, died Saturday night at Putnam Memorial Hospital after a long illness. A lifelong resident born Aug 4, 1900, he served in the Bennington Fire Department as fire chief 1935–1939 and was its oldest active member. He joined the Eagle Hose Company in 1922 and was a longtime Elk and Moose member active in civic projects.
