Lincoln Gettysburg address writing debated by scholars
Historian Mearns questions whether Lincoln drafted the Gettysburg speech during the November six hour ride to Gettysburg. Nicolay denied any writing on the train, and Speed described a half drafted note later expanded at a Lincoln home before delivery. The conflicted accounts leave the speech’s writing process uncertain but suggest Lincoln rarely spoke of it.
