Bishops Declare Birth Control Evil But Leave Room for Circumstances
The US Catholic bishops adopted an 11 000 word pastoral letter by 180 to 8 vote declaring artificial contraception an objective evil yet allowing for circumstances to lessen moral guilt. The letter urged repentance via penance and Eucharist, while calling Congress to exempt conscientious objectors from certain drafts and praising Vietnam’s bombing halt and Paris talks. It also subtly critiqued Nixon’s nuclear policy and noted the encyclical’s authority, offering Catholics a conscience based path amid internal church debates.
