First Snowfall Dumps Eight Inches in New England
The season’s first real snowfall blanketed northern and western New England with up to eight inches. Vermont saw three fatal traffic accidents while New Hampshire and Maine reported numerous fenderbenders and traffic tie ups. Massachusetts Berkshires received three to eight inches leaving motorists stranded on Route 2 Mohawk Trail and Route 9 between Dalton and Brodie Mountain. The state highway department was unprepared with gear still dismantled. Kelly’s Irish Alps offered free skiing on Brodie Mountain with about 800 takers as over four inches covered the area.

Three Vermont deaths blamed on snowstorm
The season s first snowstorm caused at least three weekend traffic deaths in Vermont. Cecil Landry 40 of Milton died after a one car crash on slushy U S 7 in Georgia as four others were injured. A two car crash on U S 4 in Mendon killed Florence Williams 70 of Mayfield N Y and left her husband George 68 in critical condition. Andre Laframboise 28 of Laval Quebec died when his car hit a bridge on U S 302 in Groton and plunged into the Wells River. Police said highways were extremely slippery and crews salted roads as accidents mounted across the region.
