In flood devastated South Viet Nam Viet Cong rained attacks on villages as U S relief efforts moved in. Amid worst floods in memory demonstrations against Premier Huong continued in Saigon while U S officials tallied storm and flood deaths at about 4870 and 42000 homes destroyed.
Ambassador Adlai E. Stevenson said the United States would accept voluntary payments by Russia and other arrears delinquents to avoid loss of votes, if acceptable to Secretary General Thant. He noted a plan to reduce arrearages below the two year threshold without crediting to peacekeeping funds.
Paris reports Friday floated the idea that President Charles de Gaulle may not seek re election next year. Informed sources hint at a major policy statement on November 22 during Alsace ceremonies but stop short of confirming any withdrawal. A large forest fire near Pittsfield Massachusetts swept three directions Friday night driven by 15 to 20 mph winds, burning a half mile path across West Mountain. Fire crews from seven communities aided efforts as the blaze spread through Berkshire County terrain.
