Meany proposes U S take over railroads in strike crisis

Meany warns the government should seize the railroads if unions representing about 500,000 of 600,000 workers are not allowed to strike for higher wages after a cooling off period. He cites other governments doing the same and says private railroad management is faltering. Congress already passed a bill to take over passenger service, creating a public corporation that will be partly owned by railroads and will not assume freight business.

Federal Reserve Cuts Discount Rate To Five Percent

The Federal Reserve Board approved a reduction to 5 percent in the discount rate charged by six of its twelve district banks, with the remaining banks expected to follow. The first cut in two years aims to spur lending and prompt banks to lower prime rates, though Market players hoped for more impact and a larger cut. Rep. Wright Patman called the move modest but positive, urging further relief for consumers and small business.
