McCarthy rejects Johnson call for unity on Vietnam war

Sen. Eugene J. McCarthy of Minnesota rejected Lyndon Johnson’s appeal for national unity over Vietnam at a University of Michigan event. He warned against silencing dissent and urged de escalation and limited bombing to curb the war.

Norwich Seeks Funds To Launch HARP Program

Norwich University President Gen Barksdale Hamlett announced plans to accept McGill University Canada’s high altitude research project HARP with an initial 301000 dollars for a three to four month transition period. Funds would cover operations during a transition while contracts with NASA Boeing Lockheed the Army and Navy are pursued. Norwich aims to host a full aerospace graduate program by 1969 with about 100 space science researchers and collaboration with McGill. Syracuse University also seeks HARP involvement and has funds ready.

Hunters Crowd License Offices Across Vermont

Farewell to Winslow's Hardware Store on West Main

A Bennington hub for generations, the Winslow's Hardware building on West Main Street closes after Alfred H. Winslow opened the bicycle shop in 1889 and expanded into hardware. Norman H. Greenberg plans to convert the first floor into stores while preserving the mid 1920s interior, a museum of era tools, kerosene lanterns, wood ice boxes, and hand pumps. The old stock, reflecting a pre electricity era, sits alongside modern stores in one of Vermont’s longest local histories.
