Italian socialists reunite to form a reform party led by Pietro Nenni, breaking with the Communists since 1947. In parliament the new party would have 96 deputies and 35 senators, behind the Communists and Christian Democrats. A San Antonio incident reports a rookie officer responding to a supposed gunman who turned out to be a meter-collection guard.
