Koch Wins NYC Mayoral Race In Landmark Victory

Democratic Congressman Edward I. Koch defeated three opponents to become New York City’s 105th mayor. With Bess Myerson and Gov. Hugh Carey backing him, Koch pledged a hard working administration to cut costs and crack down on crime. He led over Mario Cuomo as results showed Koch at 50 percent with 76 percent of precincts reporting. Democrats Carol Bellamy and Harrison J. Goldin won reelection routs for City Council president and city comptroller.

Bennington man dies after truck hits elm tree

Luther Jesse Reed III a 20 year old of Chapel Road died after his 1970 Ford pickup crashed at 3 40 p m on Old Dump Road near North Branch Street striking an elm at high speed. Witnesses said the pace was fast and the truck left the road before hitting the tree. Reed died in Putnam Memorial Hospital after emergency treatment for severe internal head injuries. Police report other arrests and incidents linked to a stolen car chase in Bennington this morning.
