PBS Debuts With Debates On Race In Landmark New Theatrics
HOLLYWOOD UPI The Public Broadcast Laboratory series on National Educational Television opened coast to coast focusing nearly all its debut on the racial issue. The program extended beyond its announced two hours and aired two anti commercial spots. A standout segment featured a live dialogue between Negroes and whites, raising sharp positions on race and proving more human than usual talk shows. The final half hour offered Day of Absence a whiteface Negro-ensemble burlesque. while its point on Negro dependence in the South was clear, the play felt heavy handed and overlong, faltering between humor and drama.
