Two Held For Armed Robbery In Mass Kidnap Case

North Adams police arrested Clarence Sullivan 18 and a 16 year old from Florida after a cruiser theft linked to the abduction of 17 year old Gloria Meserina and the assault on Adams police chief Norman Bates. The suspects faced armed robbery charges plus further counts including unlawful firearm possession and drunken driving. Police chased the stolen cruiser after an anonymous tip and halted it by sideswiping with a patrol car. The girl was abducted on Notch Road and later escaped into the woods. Bates confronted the suspects at a cabin where they held him at gunpoint before fleeing.

McNamara Warns Soviets Seen Building New Nuclear Device

Defense Secretary McNamara said the Soviet Union may be developing a new space based weapon to fire nuclear warheads at U S targets from orbit. He described a Fractional Orbital Bombardment System with 10 minute flight times, limited accuracy, and noted the United States has secretly deployed an over the horizon radar to detect such attacks and extend warning times.
