Maine Potato Farmers Fear Low Profits This Season

Maine potato growers fear slim profits as export sales to Europe drop due to a Western surplus. Hershel Smith, who farms 2,300 acres in Mars Hill, says European prices have fallen and that Maine may see prices near $2 to $2.25 per hundredweight while breakeven runs about $3.25. Bernard Shaw of Limestone notes record Western yields and a Maine harvest around 120,000 acres, with quality good but prices likely depressed by abundance.

Immunizations urged to protect children from measles and polio

Health officials warn measles cases rose 62 percent to almost 40,000 last year and project over 60,000 infections in 1977. Polio deaths have fallen, yet immunization rates drop as immunity wanes. Secretary Califano labels the situation a national disgrace and calls for 90 percent immunization by fall 1978 and a permanent school entry protection system. Parents play the key role in ensuring their children complete the full inoculation series.
