Cloudy conditions bring a chance of showers today. Tonight remains partly cloudy with a few showers possible and lows in the mid 30s to low 40s. Thursday stays partly cloudy and mild with lingering early morning showers and highs in the upper 40s to mid 50s.
Vermont voters elect Republican Richard Snelling governor with 53 percent as 96 percent of precincts report. Alden narrowly defeats Buckley for lieutenant governor. Diamond wins attorney general, Guest defeats Thomas for secretary of state amid Liberty Union third-party impact. Treasurer Hebard and other offices also decided. lottery referendum passed.
Washington says Jimmy Carter won a razor thin victory over Gerald Ford to become the nation’s first Southern president in 128 years. Carter swept the South and parts of the industrial North, earning 297 electoral votes and pledging reforms in tax, government reorganization, and aid for the poor. Ford carried 241 electoral votes, with strong showings in New Jersey Illinois California and Michigan. Dow Jones fell as markets reacted to Carter’s win. Carter will be sworn in January 20 with a Democratic Congress ready to back his stated goals.
Tuesday contests across three subdistricts in Bennington District 4 produced five incumbent victories and one defeat. Theodore Boulter won District 42 for Republicans over Democrat Charles Sauer, while Michael Silver retained District 42 seats amid a Sleeman challenge. District 43 saw Democrat David Shaffe and Republican Thomas H. Foster win re-election, with Democrat Virginia Perrotta falling short. Vermont Senate incumbents Merritt Hewitt Jr. and Madeline Harwood were also re-elected. Other incumbents in Subdistrict 41 and Benn.2 districts faced no opposition or easy margins.
Democrat Jimmy Carter defeated Gerald Ford for president, Mondale beat Dole for vice president, Democrats keep control of both houses. Governors: Democrats win nine races to Republicans five, now 37 to 12 nationwide. Since 1856 Democrats have 13 presidential wins to Republicans 18.
Washington reports Democrats expand control in Congress winning one Senate seat to hold 62-37 with one independent, and swelling House margin to about 290-145. They weather losses of several incumbents while freshmen rallied, marking the first time since 1964 both White House and Congress would be Democratic.
