Vermont towns and state units face consolidation calls

Burlington Vermont faces a push toward regional government as Vermont’s 424 local units attract scrutiny. Proposals from the Committee for Economic Development and prior Vermont studies urge consolidating towns and school districts to cut costs and raise service quality. Advocates argue efficiency rises with larger units, while opponents favor local control. The trend points toward fewer units over time, with eventual significant consolidation of services and governments.

Farm Belt Gains debated by Parties in Coming Vote

Both Republicans and Democrats seek strength in rural districts as the campaign enters its final stretch. GOP hopefuls expect gains in farm areas while Democrats aim to hold or pick up rural seats aided by rising farm incomes. Analysts note national issues and local factors will shape votes despite farm policy. Farm population growth has slowed, shrinking political weight since 1940. GOP and Democratic leaders cite polls and policy views on farm programs to forecast outcomes.

Hoff Regime How Partisan

In Montpelier Gov. Philip Hoff’s 1963 win left no Democratic heads of departments. By 1966 eight of 25 department or division heads are Democrats. Republican Richard Snelling accuses Hoff of building a state government machine with heads campaigning for him. Snelling points to Administration Commissioner William F. Kearns and Tax Commissioner Gerald Witherspoon as key Hoff campaign figures, both Democrats, who spoke at a Rutland League of Women Voters forum.
