On the eve of the 1976 vote Ford and Carter run neck and neck with 45 44 Carter in Harris survey and 47 46 Ford in Gallup. Each plans final TV appeals as pollsters call it too close to call and near certain turnout.
Mt Anthony and Bennington districts resolved a ballot shortage scare by distributing new ballots after attorney John H Williams II advised. The dispute began when 90 ballots went unaccounted for, triggering rumors of foul play and prompting steps to restore voter confidence ahead of Tuesday's special election.
In Mechanicville New York a gun battle between police and a 32 year old man ended after an hour and a half with two dead ten injured. Officers seized nine rifles including an M 1 and multiple shotguns in the barricaded apartment. A bartender and a bar patron were among those struck by gunfire during the standoff.
The partially decomposed body of Cynthia Krizack of Williamstown, missing since Oct. 7, was found Sunday afternoon in Windsor in a rocky gorge by a hunter. She was an honors student at Mt Greylock Regional High School. Autopsy set for Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield. Police said no comment on sexual assault and noted the 30-foot cliff above the gorge. Identification confirmed by a family friend.
