The Chinese Tibetan climber Phanthog became the second woman to reach Everest from the north, joining eight Tibetan-born Chinese men. NCNA hailed her feat as disproving the belief that men are superior to women, following Japan's Junko Tabei who earlier climbed Everest. The first successful Chinese ascent came May 25, 1960, by a three-man team.
