Ford imposes new oil tariff amid Congress inaction
President Ford declares Congress has acted only negatively on energy plans and announces a June 1 increase of one dollar per barrel on foreign crude. A 60 cent levy on imported refined oils will also apply, raising gasoline prices by about 1.5 cents a gallon by August. He seeks a gradual decontrol of old domestic oil and a windfall profits tax on oil companies. Critics call the move inflationary and harmful to Americans.
