New Hampshire Rejects Rooney Track Aid Bill
New Hampshire lawmakers voted 170 to 135 against an emergency aid bill to lure the Rooney family into operating the Belmont dog track. Gov. Meldrim Thomson pressed for the measure to help contractors owed nearly $2 million, while House leaders warned of broader gambling policy implications and constitutional limits on taxes. The Belmont project faces an uncertain future as the fate of racing revenue and potential tax changes hangs on court action and future sessions.
