Proper food handling for safe summer picnics
Safe food handling practices apply to picnics, public suppers, and leftovers. Pack perishable items cold in insulated containers, keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold, and avoid leaving foods to sit in sun. If freezer power fails, keep unopened, check ice crystals, refreeze only if still solid, and when in doubt throw it out.

Land trusts offer path for small farms in US
The Castex family, among others, move into a 40 acre leased “new life farm” under a community land trust in Northern California. The system, led by Northern California Land Trust and others, sells affordable long term leases to keep farms in families and curb land speculation. Major trusts like New Communities in Albany, Abnaki in Putney, and Springtree in Scottsville illustrate how 99 year renewable leases reduce estate taxes and preserve farming across the country.

Anyone can grow good geraniums
Burlington advises that with proper conditions and gardening practices, geraniums thrive in most soils. Provide six to eight hours of sun, porous well drained soil, compost or peat mix, and regular feedings. Plant 18 inches apart after frost risk ends, water deeply, and use containers with drainage. Gardeners can root cuttings in sand or vermiculite, then transplant to enriched soil.
