Scientist Solves Taconic Formation Mystery Says Two Thrust Faults Formed Range
Union College geologist Professor Philip Hewitt outlines a two fault theory for the Taconic Range formation. He argues that a first thrust moved eastern New York slate belt toward the Hudson Valley about 400 million years ago, followed by a second thrust shaping the Green Mountains and Taconic Range. The movements occurred under a shallow sea with mud lubrication, and Hewitt notes evidence mainly in the north with the south covered over. Hewitt and colleague Leo Hall lead resurvey efforts in Vermont and New York State.
