Hyannis Massachusetts faces a housing and feeding dilemma for about 30 southern Black residents, mostly children, arriving as reverse Freedom Riders. Dormitory space at a community college is needed for July sessions, with private shelter plans failing, and few jobs found.
Police rounded up Jerome Rosenberg-Surren who surrendered to the New York Daily News and was booked on homicide charges after questioning over last Friday’s holdup that killed two detectives in Brooklyn. Rosenberg claimed innocence as officials said three ex convicts were identified as the suspects.
South Vietnamese forces backed by fighter-bombers and U S helicopters killed 72 Communists and captured 34 in a Mekong Delta operation 70 miles south of Saigon. Government losses were seven killed and 10 wounded. Four American officers were wounded as air strikes inflicted heavy casualties.
Lt Cmdr Malcolm Scott Carpenter, tapped in 1959 as a Mercury astronaut, avoided a grueling two year carrier tour by stepping into the pilot role for the second U.S. manned orbit mission. He detailed his path from backup navigator to key Mercury program navigator and comms expert, reflecting on his voyage from ordinary duty to historic spaceflight.
Astronaut Malcolm Scott Carpenter completed his third orbit in Aurora 7 after a fuel management challenge during the second orbit. The capsule landed about 200 miles south of the intended point, with Carpenter in good condition and rescue teams speedily approaching from Cape Canaveral.
Marine Lt. Col. John H. Glenn Jr. is honored as the nations Father of the Year by the National Fathers Day Committee. He and his wife Anna Margaret have two children John David aged 14 and Carolyn Ann aged 13.

Fred Pabst, Dr Joseph Davidson, and Oakley Porter received recognition from Chamber President Ben Wrobel as about 80 attendees traveled the Skyline Drive, with many unable to obtain tickets due to limited space.
Vermont Highway Commissioner Russell A. Holden and aides surveyed potential access routes from U S 7 and Vermont 346 to Taconic Racing and Breeding Association's planned pari mutuel track in Pownal. A cloverleaf overpass concept was discussed, with required permissions from Boston and Maine and coordination with the Public Service Commission before any permits.
President Kennedy viewed television footage from the executive mansion as astronaut Malcolm Scott Carpenter became America's second man in orbit. He observed the lift off from the bed room TV in his living quarters before moving to his office.
One body remained missing after a Continental Airlines Boeing 707 crashed near Unionville Missouri. The wreckage trail stretched about 60 miles with 44 bodies recovered. investigators questioned a taped flight recorder while officials ruled out a collision or tornado. Eight crew members and 37 passengers perished including a Japanese born engineer who died after surviving initially.
Judge Eugene Clark ordered the Pietro M. Betts wagering case dismissed on entrapment grounds. Prosecutor Burgess said he will appeal. Betts, a Bennington diner operator, faced charges of receiving and holding wagers on horse races after a 4 April raid.
